BenQ Aora Ceiling Light is an auto-dimming ceiling light designed for children’s room. Its design ensures that every inch and corner of a 17-square-meter room is evenly illuminated with the brightness pediatricians recommend for reading. The light sensor detects ambient light in the room to prevent excess energy waste. The voice activation can detect whispers, so as not to wake sleeping children.

Background

Babies and children under three years old read and learn without a table, spending most of their time moving about on the floor. As their activities are not limited to any one specific area, a fully-lit room is essential. We interviewed eleven Taiwanese families who have children under twelve and are currently using ceiling lights. Most users complained that ceiling lights on the market are either too bright or too dark. Moreover, most users do not know what optimal lighting is, so they exclusively use the brightest setting. Therefore, we wanted to design a product that is optimally bright everywhere in the room so small children can read and play wherever they like. With a single click, users can enjoy the most suitable lighting that is healthiest for their children’s eyes.

History and Achievements

We have achieved two things with BenQ Aora Ceiling Light: optimal lighting and smart control. The special reflectors and lens ensure 850 lux at the center and 300 lux at the corners of a 16 square-meter room, which pediatricians recommend for keeping eyes healthy while reading. It is also the first ceiling light to adopt auto-dimming technology with multiple medical-based presets, including reading and relaxing. The ambient light sensor does this all without wasting any energy. As for visual comfort, indirect lighting illuminates the ceiling and its corners, ensuring the light is full and balanced without causing eye strain. Lastly, we developed whispered speech recognition so parents can adjust lighting without waking their children or fumbling for the remote in the middle of the night.

Since they are specially designed for children’s use for learning situations, all-weather eye care is especially important. This ceiling lamp has a rounded shape, good proportions and stable, even illumination. The remote control is designed to be convenient to use and modern in appearance. It is easy to find the suitable light range at different times of the day, and the intelligent voice control mode also facilitates children to control it on their own, without having to do it through a mobile phone. It is also a good design consideration to let children access smartphones as late as possible.
